چکیده

Fusion research has focused on the goal of a fusion power source that utilizes deuterium and tritium (D-T) because the reaction rate is relatively large. Fusion reactors based on the deuterium-deuterium (D-D) reaction however, might be superior to D-T based reactors in so far as they minimize the power produced in neutrons and do not requires the breeding of tritium. We explore an alternative D-D based fuel cycle and show that a levitated dipole may be uniquely suited for this application. We find that a dipole based D-D power source can potentially provide a substantially better utilization of magnetic field energy with a comparable mass power density to a D-T based tokamak

Fusion Technologies for Tritium - Suppressed D - D Fusion

The proposal for tritium-suppressed D-D fusion and the understanding of the turbulent pinch in magnetically confined plasma are new developments in fusion science that create an alternate and potentially advantageous technology pathway. Tritiumsuppressed D-D fusion eliminates the need to breed fuel from lithium, reduces the damage from 14 MeV neutrons, and allows structural materials now qualif...

First integrated test of the superconducting magnet systems for the Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX)

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is an innovative approach to explore the magnetic confinement of a fusion plasma offering the possibility of an improved fusion power source. In this concept, a magnetic dipole (a superconducting solenoid) is magnetically levitated for several hours at the center of a 5 m diameter, 3 m tall vacuum chamber. The Floating coil (F-coil) is designed for a maximu...

Stationary density profiles in the levitated dipole experiment: towards fusion without tritium fuel

The Levitated Dipole Experiment (LDX) is used to study hightemperature plasma confined by the magnetic field produced by a high-current superconducting ring. Multiple-frequency ECRH heats and sustains plasma discharges for long, quasi-steady periods, and conditions of high plasma beta are reached by adjusting the rate of neutral fueling. When the superconducting ring is levitated by attraction ...

Magnetohydrodynamic Stability in a Levitated Dipole

Plasma confined by a magnetic dipole is stabilized, at low beta, by magnetic compressibility. The ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) requirements for stability against interchange and high-n ballooning modes are derived at arbitrary beta for a fusion grade laboratory plasma confined by a levitated dipole. A high beta MHD equilibrium is found numerically with a pressure profile near marginal stabil...

Convective Cell Formation in a Levitated Dipole

A plasma that is confined in a closed field line geometry such as a levitated dipole may be subject to the formation of convective cells. Using a “Drift” fluid model we show that such flow patterns can represent an appropriate equilibrium in a dipole field that contains a plasma with a non-axisymmetric pressure profile. This can provide a means of fueling and heating a dipole confinement device...
